Copyright:   Copyright 2008 Dennis Kunkel Microscopy, Inc.
Description:   Caption: Sporulating, filamentous / hyphae fungus (Ulocladium chartarum). Filamentous hyphae are seen producing conidiophores with condia / spores (orange) at the tips. Ulocladium chartarum is widely distributed in nature and is the species most commonly found in indoor environments. It is a common indicator or water damage. It is found in house and mattress dust, in dry climates and in air conditioners. It is considered one of the most common mold allergens in the United States. The genus Ulocladium is a dematiaceous filamentous fungus that occurs in the soil and on decaying plants. It is related to the genus Alternaria and there is some cross-reactivity. Ulocladium has been reported to cause Type I (hay fever) allergy. There have been cases of Ulocladium chartarumcausing skin infections and cutaneous mycoses in immuno-suppressed patients.
