Viruses are submicroscopic particles that must use a host cell (eukaryote or prokaryote) to replicate. A virus that infects a bacterium is a bacteriophage (T4 bacteriophage, Listeria bacteriophage). Viruses cause human disease such as AIDS, herpes, influenza, hepatitis, small pox and the common cold. See also: polio, rotavirus, HIV, rhinovirus, tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), HTLV-1 [htlv-1] and rhabdovirus.
• Bacteriophage (bacteria viruses) – Listeria bacteriophage, T4 bacteriophage, lambda bacteriophage.
• Plant virus – tobacco mosaic virus (TMV, RNA virus), Cowpea chlorotic mosaic virus (CCMV, RNA virus) – family Bromoviridae.
• Avian virus – avian influenza or bird flu (Influenza A subtype H5N1) family Orthomyxoviridae.
• Fish virus – rhabdovirus (RNA virus) family Rhabdoviridae.
• Human viruses:
– Influenza A (RNA virus) family Orthomyxoviridae.
– Influenza A subtype H5N1 (H5N1, RNA virus, avian influenza, bird flu) family Orthomyxoviridae.
– HIV or Human immunodeficiency virus (RNA virus) family Retroviridae.
– HTLV-1 [htlv-1] or Human T-lymphotropic virus [human t-lymphotropic virus] (RNA virus) family Retroviridae.
– Small pox (Variola virus) family Poxviridae.
– Polio virus (RNA virus) family Picornaviridae.
– Rhinovirus (RNA virus, common cold) family Picornaviridae.
– Herpes simplex virus (HSV-2, DNA virus) family Herpesviridae.
– Hepatitis B (DNA virus) family Hepadnavirus.
– Hepatitis C (DNA virus) family Hepadnavirus.
– Rotavirus (RNA virus) family Reoviridae.
